Recognizing increased demand for digitally delivered products, Mara Holian, the product marketing team for eBay said that eBay is tightening the rules for egoods in an effort to "improve the way these products are bought and sold on eBay.

Now sellers have to identify digital items during the listing process and provide additional information about each product.

The lists of digital products that now include:

* System requirements. * Size of file. * File format. * Additional details about any software that may be required to use the digital product, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader for. pdf.

I know what you're thinking: "Should not the listings already contain this information?"

Of course. But have you ever browsed auctions for an ebook? Some vendors in fact, do not make this important basic information in their ads. Buyers now relevant information is in the same place and format for each ad, rather than be dispersed or omitted altogether.

According to the eBay site, the sellers of digital products are now forced to use a "PayPal Verified Premier" or "Verified Business" account or eBay "functionality Checkout Redirect "in order to collect payments.

While the new guidelines are certainly not a solution infallible digital piracy, eBay should be commended for taking a step in the right direction.
