Visit the island where Nelson Mandela (Madiba) was imprisoned for 27 years for his beliefs.

Robben Island is known worldwide as a place of exile, exile, isolation and deprivation of liberty. For nearly 400 years, the colonial and apartheid rulers banished those they regarded as political troublemakers, social outcasts and the unwanted of society to 575 hectares, rocky outcrop in Table Bay.

Residents do not want the island include; slaves, political leaders and religious groups opposed Dutch colonialism in East Asia; annoying local Khoikhoi and African leaders who resisted British expansion in South Africa; leprosy patients and other sick and mentally ill, the Vichy French prisoners during the war, and more recently, political opponents of the apartheid regime in South Africa and Namibia.

The Robben Island's Most Famous Prisoner:

During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. Some freedom fighters for over a quarter century in prison for his beliefs. However, people as Nelson Mandela emerged to lead South Africa to democracy, with a message of tolerance, reconciliation and hope.

The imprisoned on the island managed to turn a prison "hell hole" into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation.

The Gateway to Robben Island Nelson Mandela:

The visitor experience begins Robben Island in the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island, Clock Tower Precinct within Cape Town V & A Waterfront.

The Portal is the "continental gateway" to Robben Island, which symbolize the importance of the island's young democracy in South Africa. Homes a Gateway 150-seat auditorium, meeting rooms and a store of Robben Island Museum, among other facilities. Digital, Interactive Exhibition space in three floors Building the Gateway offers visitors a historical context of Robben Island maximum security, prison, and reflects the broad area of the island history.

Robben Island received over three hundred thousand visitors each year, with the highest percentage of South Africans. Over 95% of visitors are describes his visit to Robben Island as a stimulant positive, eye-opening experience.
