I still remember my first mobile phone – a Nokia 3110. The year was 1998 and cellular technology in South Africa was still relatively new. I hate to confess I was not that (at the time) that cell phones ever really take off.
I am however proud to say that I was the first in my family for make contact via SMS. My mother called me a couple of minutes after reading my message (in his trusty Ericsson T10 is capable of displaying about two lines of text), highly surprised – almost went mad in fact – to find what had happened …?
A look at the spec sheet for the 3110 sets of show how far we've come since then: monochrome graphics with a green backlight can display three lines of text (except the button Text only function), a phone book capable of storing 250 entries single number and, you guessed it, the ability to SMS. No alarm. No clock. No browser. No camera. No music player. No GPRS. No Wi-Fi. Ten years later, and I can not imagine life without my phone!
Some facts and figures
Mobile phones and the massive surge in their abilities have changed every aspect of our lives. It is probably easier discount buy a kidney to get accurate statistics on trends in mobile phone users in South Africa, but according Vodacom to 2008 annual report, which has a customer base of 24.8 million. Most phones (again, statistics are not easy to find) WAP have been for some time. Due to the large amount street vendors out there and even greater selection of browsers available on WAP phones, getting a coherent response, but enjoyable to all users through a major challenge.
Some tips for mobile marketers
Although mobile browsers are becoming more and more advanced, there are still a few things that may point to any marketer considering to enter this environment:
Browsers
Turning On the other hand, browsers are not very effective third available free of charge. One that stands out above the rest is Opera Mini. Developed in Java ME (Mobile Edition) that runs on almost any device that supports Java. In my opinion, any company serious about marketing their brands should serving both desktop and WAP browsers. Most Internet users out there today have become way too damaged by fantasy technologies like YouTube and Ajax to always be persuaded to switch to mobile browsing or even try. There are, however, still a huge gap between those with regular access to these applications and the potential to get where they are and with just a phone in his hand.
No doubt my uncle makes me happy to see the mobile web expands in the future. And location aware technologies (take a look at the grill), and suggestions like the one below on the Future of Mobile event in London, I think the phones have a very bright future. I think could even be the future!
